The Careyes Foundation Contemporary Art and Community Program
Founded in 2013, the Careyes Foundation Contemporary Art and Community Program is committed to supporting cultural exchange and dialogue in the context of Careyes by bringing artists into the community to produce work in a unique generative environment and to bring arts education to the community of Careyes.
The Art and Community Program will be produced under the direction of the Co-Chairs of the Careyes Foundation Filippo Brignone and Emanuela Cattaneo Adorno, the Program Coordinator of the the Art and Community Program, Viviana Dean, and the Curator of the Art and Community Program Lauri Firstenberg.
About the International Artists Residency ProgramEach year launching in August 2013 three artists will be invited during for at least a one-month residency in Careyes. Programming includes performances, screenings, artists lectures, childrens' workshops, publications, exhibitions and site-specific outdoor works.
The residency program launched with Mexico City-based artist Artemio who created a film in collaboration with local children from primary schools in Francisco Villa and in Emiliano Zapata as well as secondary schools in Zapata, Cihuatlan, Miguel Hidago and Agua Caliente. The film generated is titled El Naufragio (The Shipwreck) under the rubric of La Isla Perdida Productions. The children enacted scenes of a boat crash and when abandoned on a lonely island they find a way to survive.
About The Careyes Foundation and the Contemporary Art and Community ProgramThe program aims to bring together the community of Careyes with selected artists in the international contemporary art world. The foundation is also interested in the dialogue between southern California and Mexico. Through an artist residency program, and exhibition program and a contemporary art collection the CACP program will support cultural production and arts education in the context of Careyes.
About the artistArtemio is part of the generation of Mexican artists that came of age in the mid-90s and who proposed artistic alternatives in video, installation and performance to the rise of neo-Mexican art and painting of the '80s. His experimental multimedia work stems from the appropriation and reinterpretation of pop cultural elements as in his Rambo 2001, in which he edited out all the physical and verbal violence from the original movie through humor, cynicism and even shamelessness, Artemio questions contemporary subjects such as war and violence.
He studied several courses and workshops at the Centro de la Imagen and the National School of Fine Arts in Mexico City; the New School for Social Research and The Sculpture Center in New York. Artemio has individually shown at Pinta Art Fair, New York; the Queen Nails Annex, San Francisco; LAXART, Los Angeles; the Hayward Gallery, London; Sala de Arte Público Siqueiros, Museo de Arte Carillo Gil and La Panadería in Mexico City. He has participated in several group exhibitions in Mexico, Ecuador, Panamá, Cuba, Brasil, Spain, Korea, and the US, among others. Artemio has been a recipient of the Jovenes Creadores Grant on two occasions. He is founder and faculty member of SOMA, former director of La Panadería and founder of HCRH.

Open Call for Artists (Winter 2025-26) Last Ship Art Residency @Khajuraho

Artist in residence: The artist studios of Last Ship are situated opposite the UNESCO World Heritage temples of Khajuraho. The Viswanath temple built in 999 AD is right in front, less than 20 meters from Last Ship. Little known prehistoric and ancient historic sites in this region tell parts of a story more than 10,000 years old, of the Mughals, the Chandelas, going back to the Guptas, the Kushans, the Shungas and the Indo-Greeks all the way to prehistoric cave-dwellers, revealing secrets of the birth of the philosophies of Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism and their common Tantric spiritual traditions. The artists of the residency are invited to have their own experience of this heritage, like the sadhus, aghoris, and mystics who make solitary pilgrimages through this region, called the most powerful tantric region in the world, in search of enlightenment. The Last Ship residency program is a one-of-a-kind experience of a history, nature and culture, hidden in the chaos and turmoil...
