Qualifications
- You should be interested in the relationship between river, water, culture, environment and ecology at large.
- You should have some experience with research on local contexts, working with local residents, and other forms of participation and collaboration.
- While working on the artworks you should be able to interest the general public, maybe even encourage them to participate in the process of artistic creation.
- You should have Basic English conversational skills and the ability to mingle with other artists, local residents, school teachers and students.
Benefits for the artists
- Artists will receive an artists honorarium.
- You will be provided with the material and production costs.
- You will be provided an accommodation for the period of an artist residency before the festival and the period of the festival, on twin-sharing basis, minimum period of stay January 7 – 21, 2016 (obligatory), maximum December 15, 2015 to January 31, 2016.
- You will be provided a round-trip airfare in economy class. (We encourage you to arrange for your own travel funding and can provide you with supporting documents for the same.)
- Airport pick-up and drop services.
- Assistance by volunteers or local residents for the production of the works.
- Assistance with collecting recycled objects (e.g. plastic bottles, tin cans) or natural materials (e.g. reed, stone, wood stick, soil, rice straw, bamboo, leaf), equipment and local resources for research.
Guidelines and requirements
- The design of the artwork must be new and original, not published previously or used in any other country before the date of application. Proposals that are not original will be disqualified.
- Environment: Ensure that the environment will not be compromised in the process of creating the artwork. Use environment-friendly, natural and recycled materials. Others only if indispensable and disposable after the festival. Use local materials first.
- Safety has priority, the stability and security must be assured. The artwork has to be made to last at least 3 months and should be designed to weather gracefully over time. For safety concerns, the Festival retains the authority to dispose or dismantle the artwork.
- Community involvement: Artists will work with local residents and volunteers to create their installations. Public participation is one of the key elements of this festival.
- Coovum Art Festival is a not-for-profit initiative, free for all to attend and participate. It relies on sponsoring, grants and donations. The organizers would be grateful if participants could examine possibilities to support either by arranging required funds for their proposed project or by leading us to potential supporters. The Festival will provide all relevant documents and logistic assistance to secure the support.
How to apply
We sincerely welcome artists from all countries to take part in this event. Deadline for the submission of proposals is October 31, 2015 new extended deadline November 08, 2015, 11:59 PM IST. For proposals only .DOC or .PDF files, for images only .JPG / JPEG files will be accepted, the size of each image file being between 500 KB and 1 MB. Proposals must be written in English and submitted via email to the address mentioned below. Submissions will not be returned. The completeness of the proposal is indispensable for consideration in the judging process. Please make sure that you add the following documents:
Details of proposal
- Description of your proposal for the Coovum Art Festival 2016. Explain how your artwork will contribute to raising river, water or ecology awareness.
- Drafts of your work including estimated size of the creation and material required. They can be either sketches or computer graphics.
- Detailed cost calculation stating the amount of money you need from the festival secretariat.
- Approximate period of stay for the artist residency and the festival.
Details of artist
- CV, including your background, experiences, awards, exhibitions, publications.
- Be sure to include your full name, current mailing address, phone number, nationality, and the city you’ll be traveling out of.
- Six images of similar works you have done. List and provide details of these six images — title, date of completion, materials used, and venue where they were exhibited.
Where to send your entries
Email coovumart[at]gmail[.]com, with the following subject line: Coovum Art Festival. Attach your entry and supporting materials. If you are sending multiple entries please send a separate email for each entry and number them in the subject line as ‘entry 1 of 4’, so we know how many to expect.
Entries must be emailed. No entries will be accepted in paper format.
If your entry is too large for email, please send an email indicating that you will be sending the entries via a transfer site such as wetransfer.com
Call for proposal closes on 31st October 2015 and the selected artists will be notified during week commencing November 10th, 2015 and published on the Festival Website
