Invitation to apply
Kaunas biennial is well-known as the cradle of contemporary textile art. It has gradually outgrown the frame of the genre.
Constant changes of the concept determined the event to become a global textile art phenomenon of contemporary art. The phenomenon connects historical and cultural experiences, scientific research and technological achievements, personal stories, social constructs, cooperation strategies, interdisciplinary practices, creative experiences and industries, and weaves those into single continuous network (or cloth, as Roland Barthes the text theory author would say).
In the Biennial exhibitions (since 1997) there were already presented more than 1400 artworks by artist from more than 50 countries. These include the well-known and internationally renowned artists such as Jean Lurcat, Magdalena Abakanowicz, Yinka Shonibare MBE, Lia Cook, Reiko Sudo, Janis Jefferies, Osgemeos and etc.
13 09 2013 – 31 12 2013 there will be held the 9th Kaunas biennial UNITEXT. Artists from different creativity fields are very welcome to apply for participation.
Curators of the exhibition together with the artists will pursue a concept that is new and unfamiliar in a cultural context and will consolidate it by presenting practical examples. All the biennial participants will go into the question of a unitext, which is the latest link in work -> text -> intertext -> hypertext -> unitext semiotic chain of a philosophic / art criticism / artistic field.
The suggestion is to perceive unitext in this chain as a universal artistic language, which unifies different experiences and concepts. The exhibition will provide a unique voice for each artwork instead of handling this task to explanatory texts.
Artists are invited to suggest unitexts, which could be experienced through intuition, materiality, spontaneity, feelings, sensations, here and now experiences. Artists are welcome to present works which are based on a direct confrontation with an object / space  / semantic field.
Terms and conditions for submission:
- Works submitted for selection must be executed during 2010-2012.
- It is suggested that a cycle, a group of works or an installation is introduced.
- Project ideas are also accepted if complemented with photos of previously implemented pieces of a similar kind. Photos should represent the materiality, scope and impact of the submitted piece.
An application should consist of:
- A form filled by the participant
- PHOTOS (up to 10 pieces.), 360 dpi, of printable quality, from 2 MB to 5 MB in size
- SCHEME of the intended exposition/installation with required space and equipment indications.

Open Call for Artists (Winter 2025-26) Last Ship Art Residency @Khajuraho

Artist in residence: The artist studios of Last Ship are situated opposite the UNESCO World Heritage temples of Khajuraho. The Viswanath temple built in 999 AD is right in front, less than 20 meters from Last Ship. Little known prehistoric and ancient historic sites in this region tell parts of a story more than 10,000 years old, of the Mughals, the Chandelas, going back to the Guptas, the Kushans, the Shungas and the Indo-Greeks all the way to prehistoric cave-dwellers, revealing secrets of the birth of the philosophies of Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism and their common Tantric spiritual traditions. The artists of the residency are invited to have their own experience of this heritage, like the sadhus, aghoris, and mystics who make solitary pilgrimages through this region, called the most powerful tantric region in the world, in search of enlightenment. The Last Ship residency program is a one-of-a-kind experience of a history, nature and culture, hidden in the chaos and turmoil...
