Who can apply?
We are open to applications from artists who have a few years of professional experience, particularly in relation to finishing their education. Our average applicants have a BA/MA degree and are between 25 and 35 years old, however it is not a prerequisite to have had a formal art education.

Artists who have participated in other post academic institutions in the Netherlands (Jan van Eyck or De Ateliers), cannot be considered for a Rijksakademie residency.

Procedure
The selection procedure consists of a number of rounds which take place from March until June. In the different rounds the jury will look at the quality of the work and the application, possibilities for further development within the specific context of the Rijksakademie, and willingness and capacity to play an active role in a critically engaged artist community from around the world. The jury (consisting of artists and theoreticians affiliated to the Rijksakademie as advisors) invites a number of candidates for an interview in May/June, as the final round of the selection procedure.

An application consists of:
- online application form: all required fields must be completed (in English)
- documentation of work: please follow instructions to upload material
- A non-refundable application fee of 50 euro is charged, with an exception for artists living in the following countries (more information in the application form).

Please note that all correspondence relating to the selection process is in English.

Finances
Every selected artist will have a studio, a stipend to contribute to living expenses (in 2018: €12,200) and a working budget (in 2018: €1,500).
The Rijksakademie is generously supported by the Dutch government. The Rijksakademie Trust Fund—in close cooperation with the resident artists—raises additional funds from private and governmental foundations, corporations and private donors, both nationally and internationally. Every resident artist is expected to raise a Fellowship of € 15,000 per year, as a contribution to the costs of the residency. Selected artists will be provided with more information on this procedure after the interview round.

Annual contribution
The annual contribution is €2750 to be paid before the start of the residency.

Open Call for Artists (Winter 2025-26) Last Ship Art Residency @Khajuraho

Artist in residence: The artist studios of Last Ship are situated opposite the UNESCO World Heritage temples of Khajuraho. The Viswanath temple built in 999 AD is right in front, less than 20 meters from Last Ship. Little known prehistoric and ancient historic sites in this region tell parts of a story more than 10,000 years old, of the Mughals, the Chandelas, going back to the Guptas, the Kushans, the Shungas and the Indo-Greeks all the way to prehistoric cave-dwellers, revealing secrets of the birth of the philosophies of Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism and their common Tantric spiritual traditions. The artists of the residency are invited to have their own experience of this heritage, like the sadhus, aghoris, and mystics who make solitary pilgrimages through this region, called the most powerful tantric region in the world, in search of enlightenment. The Last Ship residency program is a one-of-a-kind experience of a history, nature and culture, hidden in the chaos and turmoil...
